Frequently Asked Questions
1. What types of therapy do you offer?
I offer individual therapy for children, teens, adults, and couples, specializing in anxiety, addiction, depression, trauma, relationship issues, and more. Whatever you’re facing, I’m here to help you work through it—one session at a time!
2. Do you offer virtual or in-person sessions?
I offer both in-person and virtual (telehealth) therapy sessions—because sometimes you need to talk to someone face-to-face, and other times you just want to do it in your pajamas with your cat as your co-therapist. Whatever works for you!
3. How long is a therapy session?
Sessions typically last 50 minutes. But if you feel like you need more time to talk about your dreams, your cat’s questionable behavior, or why you still can’t find your keys, longer sessions can be arranged! Just a heads-up—extra time is $50 for every 25 minutes, so let’s make sure we’re really diving deep into those key discussions.
4. How often should I attend therapy?
It really depends on you! Some clients start with weekly sessions to get the ball rolling, while others might be ready to slow it down as they make progress. It’s like finding your perfect pace in a marathon—you can go fast or take it slow, and we’ll figure it out together.
5. Who do you typically work with?
I work with children, adolescents, young adults, and older adults—basically, if you’re human, I’ve got your back! Each age group has its own unique quirks (from tantrums to midlife crises), and I tailor my approach to fit the needs of each individual. If you’re thinking about therapy for someone in your family (or maybe even your pet iguana), I’d be happy to chat about how I can best support them!
1. How do I schedule an appointment?
You can schedule an appointment by calling my cell-phone, using the online booking system, or emailing me—basically, however you prefer to communicate, even if you need to send a carrier pigeon (just kidding, please don’t). I’ll get back to you faster than you can say “therapy session!”
2. What is your cancellation policy?
Appointments must be canceled at least 24 hours in advance—because even therapists need time to adjust their schedules! If you cancel late, the full session fee will be charged. Think of it as a “sorry I bailed” fee… but don’t worry, I’m not offended!
3. Do you accept insurance?
I don’t accept insurance, but I can provide a superbill. Think of it like a golden ticket that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. It includes all the important info—diagnosis codes, service dates, fees—and they’ll decide how much to reimburse. Be sure to check with your provider to see if you’re eligible for out-of-network benefits. Hopefully, they’re as nice as I am!
4. What are your fees for therapy sessions?
My standard rate is $125 for individual sessions and $150 for couples counseling sessions. Sliding scale options may be available upon request—because I believe therapy should be accessible.
5. What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept credit/debit cards, cash, checks, venmo, paypal. Whatever works best for you!
1. Is therapy confidential?
Yes, therapy is completely confidential, except in cases where there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or when required by law (e.g., child abuse, elder abuse).
2. How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If life feels like a never-ending rollercoaster of emotions, relationships, or transitions, therapy might just be your seatbelt. A free consultation can help figure out if we’re a good fit—no commitment, no awkward handshake, just a chat to see if we click!
3. What can I expect in my first session?
Your first session is like the first day of school—except instead of a backpack, you bring your concerns, goals, and background. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy and make a plan tailored to you, minus the homework. Consider it the start of a journey, minus the cafeteria food!
4. How long does therapy take?
It depends—some clients see improvement in a few months, while others take a bit longer, like planting a tree and waiting for it to grow. Think of therapy as a journey, not a race—some people get to the destination faster, others take the scenic route!
5. Do you prescribe medication?
Nope, I don’t have a prescription pad—just a lot of helpful insights! But if medication might be part of your journey, I can happily refer you to a psychiatrist who’s got the meds covered while I work on the mental side of things.
1. What should I do if I’m in crisis?
If you’re in immediate danger or facing a mental health emergency, please call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. They’re like the superhero squad of crisis support—ready to swoop in and help, 24/7! Don’t hesitate, your safety is the top priority.
2. Can I refer a friend or family member?
Absolutely! If you know someone who could use a little therapeutic TLC, feel free to share my contact info. Just remember, therapy only works if they’re ready and willing—it’s like suggesting a gym membership; they’ve got to be the one to take the first step!
3. What if I don’t feel like we’re a good fit?
Finding the right therapist is important. If you feel we’re not the best match, I’d be happy to provide referrals to other professionals who may better suit your needs.
4. Do you offer workshops or group therapy?
Yes, I offer group therapy on an as-needed basis. If you’re interested, reach out and I’ll let you know when the next one is happening!
5. How can I contact you?
You can reach me at 719-628-1711 or johnthouin@gmail.com My office hours are Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, and I strive to respond within 24 hours.
